Description

The Division of Adult Cardiac Surgery offers a one-year advanced fellowship in heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. This fellowship provides advanced subspecialty training in the operative management of patients with advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support (MCS), and heart transplantation for surgeons who have completed their cardiothoracic training and desire additional training and exposure to heart transplantation. This is an exceptional opportunity to train at one of the nation’s most active and academically distinguished cardiac surgery programs at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Program Highlights

The Johns Hopkins team performed 65 heart transplants in the past year, and is expected to perform 75 this year, with a programmatic goal of safely expanding to 100 transplants annually.
We initiate ECMO support for approximately 120 patients each year, making this one of the most active ECMO programs in the nation.
The Cardiac Surgery team works in close partnership with the Johns Hopkins Heart Failure Program, and the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Director of Heart Transplantation and the multidisciplinary transplant team.
 

Clinical Responsibilities
The fellow will be involved in multidisciplinary patient evaluation and selection, deployment of mechanical circulatory support, ECMO cannulation and daily management, heart transplantation, donor organ procurement, and postoperative management following transplantation.

Candidate Qualifications

MD or equivalent, with eligibility for licensure in Maryland.
Successful completion of an accredited cardiothoracic surgery residency.
Board-certified (or board-eligible) in cardiac surgery.
Demonstrated excellence in adult cardiac surgery with specific expertise in transplantation, MCS, coronary revascularization, and heart failure surgery.
